Just a disclaimer before I get into the content of this post: what I say in this post will probably largely contradict the previous post I made entitled "Why I want to work in sports." Believe me, I don't mean to back track on what I said, and I have not changed my mind or my stance on anything said in that post. I have simply gained some new perspective brought upon by a newly discovered opportunity of mine. Ok, now into this.
I am a freshman in college. I have so much time ahead of me to experience new things and find what truly makes me happy. I know that I love working in sports, and I hope that my life lands me in a position within that industry.
However, I am already so far in the game that it could be...not a good thing for me? I want to be able to move up in sports, and ideally my next internship would be with a bigger team, and it would be paid. However, almost no internship programs with big 4 league teams offer that kind of thing to students my age, no matter how experienced I am. I'll honestly probably realistically have to wait about 1-2.5 years before I can be considered an ideal candidate for one of those positions.
This is both a good thing and a bad thing. It's bad because it means my progress could be stalled, or I will be forced to take several more internships that are exactly the same or that back track where I am right now. It's good because it gives me this summer, and really this next year, to explore other things beyond just sports.
There's a PR and special events internship, that is paid, that I am looking into. It is for a nonprofit performing arts organization in Pittsburgh, and I cannot shake the idea of taking that position from my mind.
Don't get me wrong. I am still planning on applying and interviewing for each and every summer sports-related internship in the Bowling Green, Nashville, Lexington, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh areas that are in the PR/CR/promotions/sponsorship/media fields, but this could be an opportunity for me to grow and learn in a discipline that I never considered before.
Stay tuned for updates on what I eventually decide to do. I'm excited to see where this new and hopefully rewarding road takes me.
